As the weather begins to cool down and the seasons shift, it’s the perfect time to fall in love with a new artist. Here are some of the most anticipated art exhibitions around the world for fall 2022.
Gilded Darkness
From September 12th to October 16th, 2022, the exhibition titled Gilded Darkness by American artist Nari Ward will be displayed in the city of Milan. In the outdoor and indoor spaces of the Centro Balneare Romano, in the Città Studi neighborhood, artist Nari Ward is known for his sculptures and installations which are often made from recycled materials. Struck by the mass of abandoned objects in his neighborhood, Ward began collecting them and using his artwork to endow them with new meaning. He utilizes objects such as shopping carts, umbrellas, shoelaces, strollers, etc. to give contemporary sculpture more of a theatrical experience. The exhibition opens with one of his best-known works titled Amazing Grace, which is constructed of a collection of more than three hundred abandoned strollers arranged in the form of a ship’s hull.
Bámigbóyè: A Master Sculptor of the Yoruba Tradition
Located at the Yale University Art Gallery, this is the first exhibition dedicated to the workshop of Nigerian artist Moshood Olúṣọmọ Bámigbóyè (ca. 1885–1975). Having been part of a generation of Yorùbá woodcarvers with workshops in southwestern Nigeria, Bámigbóyè was in part known for the masks he made in the 1920s and 1930s for ceremonies called Epa. Compiling artifacts from museums such as the Yale University Art Gallery and the National Museum in Lagos, Nigeria, the exhibition includes pieces such as masks, sculptures, textiles, beadwork, ceramics, metalwork, and architectural elements from palaces and shrine complexes. Running from September 9th to January 8th, 2023, the exhibition also includes video footage of an Epa performance staged by the artist’s family in honor of the exhibition.
Wolfgang Tillmans: To Look Without Fear
Photographer Wolfgang Tillmans has experimented for over three decades with what it means to engage the world through photography. Running from September 12th to January 1st, 2023, the new exhibition titled Wolfgang Tillmans: To Look Without Fear presents an in-depth look at the artist’s career and what it means to be alive today. The exhibition includes portraits, images of nightlife, abstract images made without a camera, windowsill still lifes, astronomical phenomena, and more. Tillmans continuously attempts to develop connections between his photos and the social space of an exhibition. For example, at his installations, there are often unframed prints taped to walls or clipped or hung from pins. In regard to his displays, the Tillmans stated, “I see my installations as a reflection of the way I see, the way I perceive or want to perceive my environment… They’re also always a world that I want to live in.”
Matisse in the 1930s
Located at the Philadelphia Museum of Art, this exhibition explores changes in the artist’s work across multiple forms including decorative and easel painting, sculpture, printmaking, drawing, and the illustrated book. The show also addresses the methods that renewed Matisse’s style after a creative slump around the 1930s. Running from October 20th to January 29th, 2023, the exhibition also showcases the artist’s modern renderings of mythological themes from antiquity and depictions of models in the studio.
